How Coaching Could Be Beneficial for You!

Hiking Trail_edited.jpg

Leadership and ministry are tough...

You are not alone!

Leadership and ministry can often feel isolating. It's true that finding someone to walk alongside you and provide a safe space for processing and brainstorming is essential. While you may have well-intentioned individuals within your staff, board, or mentor circle, or even your spouse, it's important to recognize that they might carry their own agendas, however well-meaning they are. Even those you trust the most may struggle to engage in the conversation without their personal agenda coming into play.

The reality is that even the most trusted individuals in your sphere might not always be the best thought partners for the specific situation you're grappling with. In such cases, you need a space where you can work through challenges without the fear of repercussions. This is where a coach can make a significant impact. A coach's sole agenda is to assist you in processing, gaining awareness, and finding the best path forward, without any other interests clouding the conversation.

Questions and Myths about Coaching

A coach is…

  • someone to assist you in finding a safe space to process, gain perspective, and develop a plan to move forward in any situation where you feel stuck or uncertain.

  • An agenda-free thought partner.

  • a safe space to discuss your ideas, vent constructively, and process through your frustrations, pain, and uncertainty.

  • someone to help you gain new awareness about yourself and your ministry context.

  • someone who helps you develop healthy boundaries, systems, and awareness.

A coach is not…

  • someone who tells you how you should do your job.

  • just for those who are a mess and need help

  • someone who thinks they know more than you do about your situation and context.

  • there to solve your problems for you.

  • just glorified advice giver

  • going to give you empty encouragement.

  • there to make you feel like a failure.

coaching is different than Counseling/Consulting

  • Counseling is suitable when you're in a place of pain and need healing, often focusing on past experiences affecting your current health and well-being.

  • Consulting is ideal when you need someone's expertise and experience shared with you.

  • Coaching falls between these two. The focus is on where you are and how to move forward, assuming you are in a relatively healthy place. It operates under the belief that you have the insight and knowledge you need but require a place and a person to help you process and gain perspective to move forward. Coaching is for when you are stuck and seeking a way to create momentum.
